International brewing force, Interbrew, has announced that it has appointed John Brock, chief operating officer of the soft drinks and confectionery group, Cadbury Schweppes, as its new CEO, succeeding Hugo Powell who is to retire.

Interbrew said Brock would take up his role on February 1. The group's share price rose by 5% on the news. Powell, 58, is to remain as an advisor to the company, Interbrew said. There had been speculation for more than a year that he would soon retire.

The Belgian brewing force said Brock would bring the kind of international experience Interbrew needed. "We are sure he has the background to bring Interbrew new momentum," said company spokesman, Corneel Maes. "We have someone (with) an international profile who knows what consolidation means and knows how to grow a company."
