Corona Extra is now available in a bigger bottle

Grupo Modelo has launched a bigger-sized bottle for its Corona Extra beer brand, to take advantage of what the company believes is a trend for sharing drinks.

The 71cl Corona Extra is more than twice the size of the regular 33cl Corona Extra bottle and was launched on 1 May. Grupo Modelo said the the launch was in response to Neilsen data that showed sharing bottles outperformed general lager sales by 9% in the off-trade.

The 4.5% abv beer has an SRP of GBP2.79 (US$4.51) and is distributed in the UK and Ireland by Molson Coors Brewing Company.

Molson Coors secured a UK distribution deal with Grupo Modelo in October 2010.

Expert analysis

Grupo Modelo SA de CV in Beer (World)

Grupo Modelo was the seventh largest global brewer in 2011. The company is the leading player in its domestic Mexican market, and its Corona Extra brand is exported to 180 countries. Modelo is well placed for future growth in Mexico, and should be able to benefit from the growing popularity of imported premium lager brands in its main US, Canadian and UK markets, but in order to maximise its growth, it should invest in strengthening its position in key markets and extending its coverage further.
