UK: Grupo Codorníu unveils new wine brand
By just-drinks.com editorial team | 9 December 2008
Grupo Codorníu is launching a new wine brand in the UK, as sales of higher priced Spanish wines grow.
The new range, named The Spanish Quarter and classified Viñedos de España, mixes traditional Spanish grapes with international varietals that are more familiar to UK consumers, Codorníu said today (09 December).
The two blends on general release are Chardonnay-Albariño and Cabernet Sauvignon-Tempranillo. All grapes are sourced from the group's own vineyards.
The Spanish Quarter carries a recommended retail price of GBP7.99, in order to "take advantage" of growing popularity for higher end Spanish wines, the firm said.
Carolyn D'Aguilar, UK brand manager for The Spanish Quarter, said: "The UK is one of the biggest importers of Spanish wine and the Spanish category is growing in value. Sales of Spanish wines priced above GBP5 have increased 20.6% over the past year."
The Spanish Quarter wines' packaging feature brightly painted Spanish cultural images.
