UK: Gordon & MacPhail malt gets Tuscan finish

By | 27 February 2007

Malt whisky specialist Gordon & MacPhail has unveiled a Scotch matured in Tuscan wine casks.

The company said yesterday (26 February) that Benromach Sassicaia Wood Finish, from its Benromach distillery, will be available from early next month.

The whisky, which will be unveiled officially at Whisky Live in London later this week, will have less than 1,000 units from the 3,000 units out-turn available in the UK.

Part of the whisky's maturation takes place in Sassicaia wine casks from the Tuscan wine-producing region of Bolgheri.

"Benromach is a hand-made, exclusive single malt whisky that is complimented by the qualities of one of the world's most esteemed wines," said David Urquhart, director at Gordon & MacPhail.

"A beautiful balance is struck between the rich Sassicaia and the fruit and peat smoke elements of Benromach."

Bottled at 45 abv, Benromach Sassicaia will be available in 70cl bottles, and will retail at between GBP26.99 (US$53.00) and GBP28.99.
