RUSSIA: Further delay in alcohol controls - report

By | 26 January 2007

Russia has been hit by yet another delay in its attempts to curb the counterfeit alcohol trade, according to local reports.

Citing the Russian government's press service, RIA Novosti reported yesterday (25 January) that authorities have put back the deadline for alcohol producers and sellers to submit data to the Unified State Automated Information System (USAIS).

Alcohol companies now have until 1 November to provide the data, nine months later than the initial 1 February deadline.

The USAIS will collate data on the volume of products and their alcoholic content, the news service noted. Drinks companies, with the exception of retailers, are required to fit counters to their systems to measure this - without the counters, they will not be permitted to operate.

Earlier this month, local reports said that the introduction of excise stamps on wine and spirits imported into the country has also been delayed. The Prime-Tass news agency noted that the Russian government extended the deadline from 29 December to 30 March.
