UK: Fairhills rolls out “eco-friendly” wine

By | 3 July 2008

Fairtrade wine producer Fairhills is introducing an environmentally friendly addition to its South African wine range.

The 100% recyclable bag-in-box offering is designed to be "convenient" and is available in Pinot Grigio and Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc varieties.

The wines come from the Fairhills project in South Africa - a joint venture between Origin Wines and the South African Du Toitskloof winery, which employs around 800 people and offers better work and living conditions for farmers and their families, the company said.

"This is a really important step for Fairhills Wine," said CEO Bernard Fontannaz. "As the largest Fairtrade wine supplier in the UK we feel it is our duty to take environmental issues into account when packaging our wine. Our bag-in-box is not only a convenient addition to our wine range it also features a recyclable cardboard outer and is lighter to transport around the globe, resulting in a lower carbon footprint."

The Fairhills South Africa one litre bag-in-box is available in branches of Waitrose priced GBP6.19 (US$12.31).
