Greene King has posted a rise in like-for-like sales at its managed pubs in Q1. The British brewer said today that sales were up by 2.6% in the first three months of its financial year, broadly in line with last year's performance.

The firm said that sales leapt by 4.4% in the first eight weeks of the quarter as drinkers flocked to its Pub Company-managed pubs to watch England play in the Euro 2004 football tournament.

Total beer sales by volume in the company's 2,000-plus pubs fell in the quarter by 1%.
