Radeberger Gruppe has received the green light from the European Commission for its proposed purchase of Getränke Essmann.

The German brewer, one of the country's largest, was given the go-ahead to buy the drinks distributor yesterday (27 March). "After examining the operation, the Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it," the EC said.

Getränke Essmann handles wholesale distribution of beverages in Lower Saxony, Bremen, North Rhine Westphalia and Saxony-Anhalt, and brews beer, albeit on a small scale, through its subsidiary Phoenix.

Radeberger, which is part of the Oetker Group, currently accounts for around 15% of the German beer market and has 14 breweries around the country.
