Diageo has yet to decide what to do over its sponsorship deal with the LA Clippers

Diageo is reviewing an initial decision to suspend its sponsorship of the LA Clippers after the US basketball team’s owner, Donald Sterling, was given a lifetime ban by the NBA for racist remarks.

Sterling was hit with the ban and a fine of US$2.5m yesterday (29 April) after the 80-year-old billionaire was heard making racist comments to his girlfriend on a leaked recording. Diageo initially said it was suspending its sponsorship because of Sterling's comments. Another high-profile corporate sponsor, Mercedes-Benz, has cancelled its contract.

However, following yesterday’s action by the NBA against Sterling, the company said: “We commend the commissioner and the league for their swift and decisive action and will be reviewing with the Clippers organisation accordingly.”

No Diageo brands are linked to the team as part of the tie-up. A company spokesperson declined to give further details of the sponsorship deal.
