Diageo has extended its range of single malt Scotch whiskies with the introduction of a 'Distillers Edition' expression of the Islay single malt Caol Ila.

The Distillers Edition range comprises limited-quantity whiskies which, after their usual ageing process in American or European oak casks, undergo a second maturation in casks that previously held a fortified wine.

Diageo promotes its flagship single malts under its Classic Malts range with each whisky in that stable having a 'Distiller's Edition' extension, where each single malt whisky is matched with a particular caskwood to enhance its own unique style and distillery character.

"There is a strong following for our Distillers Edition expressions, where the character of a famous single malt whisky is further enhanced in a happy marriage with carefully-chosen casks," said Nick Morgan, Diageo's marketing director for Classic Malts Selection.

The Caol Ila Distillers Edition has been double matured for up to six months in dark Moscatel caskwood, selected to complement the whisky's "sweetly fruity, smoky intensity", Diageo said.

The whisky is being launched as an exclusive with World Duty Free (WDF), the duty free retailer that operates stores in BAA airports in the UK. Caol Ila Distillers Edition will then be made available in other European travel retail outlets, and from August it will be introduced to established domestic malt whisky markets.
