Craft Brew Alliance has appointed long-time board member David Lord as its next chairman.

Lord, who has been on the US brewer's board since its inception in 2008, will assume the chair on 1 January. He replaces Kurt Widmer, whose retirement was confirmed in October.

Lord was also on the board of Redhook Brewery from 2003 until the company merged with Widmer Brothers in 2008 to form CBA. The brewer is now 32%-owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev.

"I am honoured to be elected chairman... ," said Lord. "I look forward to working with CBA's executive leadership, led by Andy Thomas, to continue positioning CBA for long-term growth and success."

A former attorney and business litigation specialist, Lord was president of Pioneer News Group from 1991 until 2009, when he became vice-chairman, which he held until late-2012. He currently serves on the boards of the Pioneer News Group and Wick Communications.

Last month, CBA reported a near-60% slump in net profits from the first nine months of this year, as sales inched up by 1.5%.
