Germany's Federal Constitutional Court has rejected the pleas of seven drinks groups who had been seeking to overturn the mandatory deposit system for non-refillable drinks containers.

The Court said that the companies would have to await forthcoming decisions from local administrative courts before appealing to the top court.

The drinks sellers had also complained that the lower local courts had been taking too long to make a decision.

The drinks companies argued that the deposit system, which came into force at the beginning of the year, was a threat to their business.
