UK: Complaints brand Pussy Drinks ad 'sexist' - watchdog

A UK energy drinks makers' sexually implicit billboard ad has received a high level of complaints, with many branding it "offenisve to women", UK regulators have said.

The Pussy Drinks ad for its namesake brand, which carries the tagline “The drink's pure. It's your mind that's the problem” has attracted 89 complaints, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) told just-drinks today (6 March). “The general nature of the complaints are that its offensive to women and unsuitable for children to see,” an ASA spokesperson said.

Yesterday, a Scottish womens' charity called for a boycott of Pussy products after it branded the UK-wide billboard campaing “sexist”, according to the Herald.

Pussy Drinks referred media inquires to the ASA.

It is not the first time Pussy Drinks has provocked a public outcry in the UK. In 2008, viewers complained after the beverage appeared on a Channel 4 show. A spokesperson at the time said: "It is a very sophisticated brand and not at all trashy."

Last year, the ASA rejected a complaint that a Britvic ad shown in Ireland was sexist and objectified women.
