JAPAN: Coca-Cola's iron powder recall deepens

Coca-Cola Japan has widened the recall of a swathe of products found to contain iron powder.

The company said today (9 May) that it would withdraw 2.37m bottles of soft drinks laced with iron powder, up from the original recall of 570,000 bottles earlier this month.

Some 27 beverages, including Coca-Cola and Diet Coca-Cola, are to be recalled. The company insisted the drinks may contain a small amount of iron powder but that they pose no health hazard to consumers, and that the recall is merely a precautionary measure.

"We will take thorough measures to ensure quality and prevent a recurrence and make efforts to improve the management structure," Coca-Cola Japan, according to a report from news agency AFX.
