CHINA: Coca-Cola Co moves to quash fungicide rumours
Coca-Cola Co is taking legal action
The Coca-Cola Co has said it will pursue those responsible for spreading false rumours that its orange juice in China contains fungicide.
Bai Changbo, vice-president of Coca-Cola Greater China, said the company has filed a police report and “will hold the perpetrators legally responsible”, China's state media reported yesterday (10 January). A Coca-Cola spokesperson confirmed the move to just-drinks, but did not comment further.
Internet rumours appeared in China this week that a Coca-Cola employee had admitted on TV, Coca-Cola orange juice contained the toxic chemical. Coca-Cola says the rumours are false, adding that there there is no safety issue and no TV show stating that.
It said the rumours stem from the distortation of an issue with Brazilian orange products last year, when Coca-Cola alerted the US Food and Drug Administration over low levels of the fungicide carbendazim in the company's own orange juice and in its competitors.
