Coca-Cola Bottling Co.'s Philadelphia plant has been hit by a strike. Around 450 staff at the factory walked out yesterday after rejecting the company's last contract offer by three-to-one.

On Sunday, Teamsters Local 830 rejected the company's offer and said that Coca-Cola Bottling had offered inadequate increases in wages and medical and pension benefits. Members of the union also criticised the treatment of employees by management at the company.

A spokeswoman for the bottler said that Coke was surprised by the walkout as the company felt it had offered a generous package of salary, benefit and pension increases.
