UK: Champagne Deutz switches Berkmann for Gonzalez Byass in UK

By | 18 July 2013

Champagne Deutz has called time on its UK distribution partnership with Berkmann Wine Cellars, with the UK arm of Gonzalez Byass set to take over.

The French company said earlier today (18 July) that it will change distributors in the company on 1 August. This move follows “strategic reviews” at both Berkmann and Deutz, said Berkmann, which also noted that it has recently taken on the distribution for Champagne Drappier in the UK.

“It has been a privilege to work with Champagne Deutz for the last 15 years and we part company on good terms. We wish them every success going forward,” said Berkmann’s MD, Rupert Berkmann.

Gonzalez Byass UK already handles brands such as Quinta do Noval, Jackson Estate, Wirra Wirra and Undurraga in the UK.

Berkmann will continue to distribute the wines of Delas Frères, the Rhone Valley producer owned by Deutz.

Global market review of Champagne – forecasts to 2016

Some of the issues and challenges addressed in the previous edition of just-drinks' Champagne report continue to influence a category struggling to grow. Recovery from economic downturn and tumbling sales was evidenced in 2010 and part way through 2011, only to be replaced with a further slow down at the end of that year and continuing into 2012. This has been more prevalent in the western European countries. Elsewhere there has been better sales performance, noteably in the US and Japan, significantly in Australia and not forgetting the burgeoning economies of Asia and Greater China. However, even these new markets can only go part way to offset the situation in the more mature markets, to such an extent that total Champagne shipments are expected to rise only slightly during 2012. According to the report, pronounced growth is unlikely until 2015.|
