Carlsberg inherited Mythos Brewery in Greece from Scottish & Newcastle

Carlsberg has lined up a merger in Greece with the third largest brewer in the country, Olympic Brewery.

The company, which owns the local Mythos brand, said early today that the move will result in the creation of “a strong number two” in the country and will account for 29% of the total beer market. The merger will also “generate synergies within areas such as procurement, production and distribution”, Carlsberg said.

The Denmark-headquartered brewer will own 51% of the entity and has appointed Lars Lehmann as its chairman and Alexandros Karafillides as CEO.

“The Greek market offers interesting opportunities,” said Carlsberg CEO Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen. “We have been very pleased with the performance of Mythos Brewery since we took over the business as part of the Scottish & Newcastle acquisition (in 2008).

“The merger … represents a step-change for our local business and we are very excited about the prospects for the merged company.”

Olympic produces the Fix beer brand.
