Carlsberg looking to expand logistics ops in UK

Carlsberg's UK arm has signed a fresh five-year distribution deal with Punch Taverns, the country's largest pub group.

Carlsberg said today (28 June) that it will continue to be the exclusive drinks distributor to Punch's 7,100-strong pub network.

The deal covers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and will start once the current agreement finishes in 2012, taking the partnership through to 2017.

"Carlsberg UK is committed to delivering high class logistics solutions to all its key customers, so to secure a long-term agreement with one of the biggest retailers in the UK clearly shows our credentials in this area," said the brewer's CEO in the UK, Isaac Sheps.

Carlsberg employs 1,000 staff in its in-house logistics business.

"Our logistics operation is a core part of our business and one we are looking to expand," said Sheps.

His comments contrast with the strategy being pursued by Carlsberg's rival, Heineken, which last week announced it would sell off its own drinks distribution business, WaverleyTBS.
