DENMARK: Carlsberg extends European football tie-up
Carlsberg has extended its association with football in Europe with a deal to sponsor the UEFA Cup until 2009.
The Danish brewer has enjoyed a link with the tournament since 1998 when it began sponsoring the final of the competition. The agreement will see Carlsberg's association with the competition extend from the quarter-finals to the final for the next three years. Financial details were not disclosed.
Carlsberg International sponsorship director Keld Strudahl said: "We are delighted to extend our partnership with UEFA. Their competitions showcase some of the best teams in European football and we believe Carlsberg is the ideal partner for such prestigious events."
Lennart Johansson, president of European football's governing body, UEFA, said: "We have enjoyed a great relationship with Carlsberg over the years as sponsors of a number of UEFA properties. We are thrilled they have chosen to extend their association with us."
Leading clubs around Europe compete in the UEFA Cup each season. Carlsberg also said late last week that it will also sponsor the UEFA Super Cup, contested by the winners of the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, until 2008.
