CANADA: Brick Brewing sues founder

Brick Brewing, the Canadian brewer, has filed a lawsuit against its founder, James Brickman, alleging financial wrongdoing against the company.

Brick said yesterday (2 June) that it is seeking damages of more than CAD$1m (US$920,000) from Brickman in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Brickman, it said, "committed wrongs against the corporation for several years and caused the corporation significant damages".

Group president and CEO George Croft said: "It is most unfortunate that this has come to light. The board of directors is very disappointed, but must act according to its duties and obligations, and pursue this matter on behalf of all Brick Brewing shareholders."

Further details were not given.

Brickman left his role as group executive chairman in December 2008 and resigned from the board in February 2009.

Separately, Brick Brewing said last month that Labatt is taking it to Canada's Federal Court, alleging that Brick's Red Baron beer looks too similar to Labatt's Brava brand.
