Spanish brewers have voiced concern at "excessive" new proposals from the country's government that are designed to curb drinking among younger consumers.

The plans, unveiled last Friday, seek to cut drinking by limiting alcohol advertising on TV and banning sponsorships that link alcohol to sports.

While the beer industry favours legislation to promote moderate and responsible drinking, it said the proposal to ban sponsorships - a key marketing tool for brewers like Mahou or San Miguel - goes too far.
A spokesperson for trade body Cerveceros de Espana told just-drinks that it would "certainly oppose" plans to end sports sponsorship.

The plans, which could be approved in a year, also seek to limit alcohol TV spots by allowing them to broadcast only after 10pm versus the current 8pm cut-off time.

"Why should we have to do this when people can watch alcohol ads through international cable channels?" the spokesperson said.
