The Bordeaux wine federation, the CIVB, has been taken to court by an alcoholism prevention group  (ANPA) over its recent advertising campaign.

The hearing is set to take place before a Paris tribunal on March 8 with ANPA's complaint focusing on the CIVB's slogan, "Buvons moins, buvons meilleur," "Drink less, drink better," which it says contravenes French legislation on alcohol advertising.

The Burgundy wine federation has been the target of similar action by the ANPA.

Action against wine advertising comes at a time when growers and traders are having to cope with a sustained slump in sales at home and abroad. Exports of Bordeaux and Burgundy wines fell by 7 and 8% respectively in 2003.
