According to figures released by the Spanish brewers' association, Cervecerias de Espana, beer sales in Spain reached 26.96m hls in 2001, up 4.7% from 2000. Beer production was said to have totalled 27.7m hls, a 4.9% increase. Spain is the third largest beer-producing country in Europe after Germany and the UK.

Spain's seven brewing concerns posted a combined turnover of €2.112 billion ($1.99 billion) in 2001, up 4.65% from the previous year.

Heineken is the largest brewer in Spain with a market share of 38.1%, followed by Mahou-San Miguel with 33.4% and Damm with 17.3%. The other major brewers are Compania Cerveceria de Canarias, Cervezas Alhambra, Hijos de Rivera and La Zaragozana, none of which has more than a 5% share of the market.
