Australian wine is headed for a major boom in Japan according to wine importer Mikuni Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Australian wine companies are expected to achieve a fivefold increase in exports to Japan with growth coming mainly from competitively priced wines. In so doing, Australia would capture 15% of Japan's $5.37 billion wine market by 2007.

BRL Hardy, Southcorp and Foster's are all expected to increase their sales to Japan in the coming year. "We are expecting an Australian wine boom in Japan," said Fumikazu Okada of Mikuni Coca-Cola Bottling Co.'s wine import department. Mikuni says it will import 30,000 cases of Australian wine in the year to the end of June.
