McGuigan Sets the Benchmark with a Premium Philosophy

Internationally-awarded Australian winery, McGuigan Wines, has released its most premium wine to date – a limited release, super premium 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz known as The Philosophy, which will be available to taste at the London Wine Fair 2014, stand S72.

Handcrafted in a traditional Claret style, the wine represents the vision, strength, passion and drive of McGuigan winemakers and is the culmination of four generations of McGuigan family winemaking.

Speaking about The Philosophy - which was over a decade in the making - Neil McGuigan, chief winemaker, McGuigan Wines, said;

“When I first re-joined the business, I put a challenge out to the McGuigan winemaking team: to create a true, icon wine for our brand. I remember the reaction well – it took people a while to get their head around what I wanted to do.”

“But my philosophy on making wine is simple. Every day you need to have the ambition to craft a super-premium wine; it channels the energy and focus to be on quality at every step of the process. Put this in place and pretty soon that attitude flows across your entire portfolio – and your $10 wine starts tasting like a $12 wine. It filters through everything you do, and every wine that you make no matter whether it is at the more accessible level, or a super-premium limited release.”

“Trough this project we’ve made the wine the hero; a fact vindicated by our ongoing international awards success.”

The Philosophy is made from the two red varieties that made Australian red wine famous – namely Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz – and uses super-premium fruit from the Eden and Clare Valley districts in South Australia.  It has a complex nose with blueberry fruits, mocha and vanilla - showing power, refinement, elegance and incredible length on the palate, with pronounced fine grain tannins and solid longevity.

“This wine is something of which the Australian industry should aspire to – flavour, elegance and finesse. There is one thing this wine is not – it’s not an overly jammy, sweet fruited, high alcohol ‘bigger than Texas’ red that has been tailor made to fit the palate of a global wine critic.  It’s not ‘bigger is best’, which seems to be a global trend of late. Wines that are all front with no substance or longevity; wines that fall over after three years in bottle.”

“The Philosophy is made up of small parcels of fruit from multiple regions in South Australia, and was aged in French and American oak for two years prior to bottling - spending a further two years in bottle to ensure adequate maturation. It was this process that allowed us to create a wine of great concentration, finesse and balance. It is wine that we can be proud of with longevity that will continue to enhance the reputation of Australian wine for many years to come,” finished McGuigan.

It is recommended The Philosophy be enjoyed now with a rare roasted aged fillet of beef with a red wine reduction. Additionally, it can be cellared for ten or more years for optimal drinking enjoyment.

The 2010 McGuigan The Philosophy is limited release with an RRP of £100.
