Visitors continue to return to Vinexpo, with record interest from China helping to erase 2009's slump, official figures have shown.

Some 48,858 people attended last month's Bordeaux event, a 1.5% increase from the last time the exhibition took place in France, in 2011, organisers said today (2 July). Chinese visitors were the show's biggest non-French contingent with a record 3,388, up 12% from two years ago.

The attendance marked a near return to 2007 numbers, when about 50,000 visitors came to the show, which alternates between Hong Kong and Bordeaux. In 2009, numbers dropped by about 8%, with officials blaming the global economic downturn.

Other Asian countries showed strong attendance levels: Japanese numbers were up by 17.5%, Indian up 32.7% and Vietnamese up 20.4%.

US attendance stayed mainly flat with 1,433, while the UK added about 100 more visitors than last year with 1,418. Russian visitor numbers were up by 10% on 2011 and French numbers remained stable, organisers said.

Vinexpo last month announced it will hold two new shows in Asia next year, in Tokyo and Beijing.
