Asahi Group's Australian subsidiary, Schweppes, is to close its Wulkuraka plant as part of a restructuring of its facilities in the country, according to local reports.

Around 40 full-time staff have been told that the staged closure is a result of recent drinks industry restructuring, Food Magazine Australia reported today (19 August). Earlier this month, the Australian Competition Commission approved Asahi's purchase of P&N Beverages.

In order to gain approval however, Asahi agreed to swap some of its Schweppes production lines for some P&N production lines.

As a result, P&N will take over part of the Wulkuraka operation and build a new factory in Ipswich, Bundamba, scheduled to open within 12 months. P&N will trade as Tru Blu Beverages.

Schweppes could not be reached for comment.
