Anheuser-Busch is to appeal a trademark ruling it lost in China last month against arch-rival Budejovichy Budvar.

In a statement released to just-drinks, the US brewing goant said it was "disappointed China's Trademark Appeal Board has decided not to deny registration of Budejovicky Budvar's two trademark applications."

The dispute began in China in 1999 and Budvar admitted to just-drinks that the recent ruling was not the end of the battle because Anheuser was able to appeal.

Anheuser's statement went on: "This decision has no effect on Anheuser-Busch's business in China or anywhere else.  Our trademarks for Budweiser and Bud remain valid and unchallenged in China, and we will continue to sell our flagship brand there as we have for years.

"We disagree with this ruling and plan to appeal."
