US: Angostura ups ante in US, creates HQ

By | 11 September 2007

Angostura is planning to establish contract and branded production operations and a US corporate HQ at the former Seagram distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

The Caribbean spirits producer, which acquired the facility earlier this year, confirmed the plans today (11 September).

"We're delighted to expand our presence in Lawrenceburg and elsewhere in the US, and the establishment of a US headquarters is a first step to accomplishing that goal," said Lawrence A. Duprey, chairman of CL Financial, the privately-owned Caribbean company which owns Angostura. "With this acquisition we have the ability to provide a one-stop-shop for the distillation, maturation, blending, bottling and packaging of alcoholic beverages in the white and brown spirit sectors."

Angostura's acquisition of the Lawrenceburg facility from Pernod Ricard saved around 150 jobs. Pernod had announced that it was to close the site, making some 400 people redundant. However, no brands were acquired as part of the sale.

Angostura said it expected that the independent operator status and favourable economies of scale would make it "an attractive supplier" for distillates and bottling. The company added that the Lawrenceburg facility "provides an almost ideal central location with perfect infrastructure and distribution access via road, rail and barge". The unit has an annual bottling capacity of some 18m cases.

The Angostura Group of companies will be one of the first new customers for the plant, with plans to move some packaging of products, including Angostura bitters and Lemon Lime & Bitters, to the Lawrenceburg site.

Duprey added: "Our goals are to aggressively grow our presence in the US. An industry trend has been to divest of manufacturing capacity and concentrate on brand equity. We plan to lure business to Lawrenceburg and develop long-term relationships with companies wishing to acquire better quality and service for both distillate and packaging."

Sectors: Spirits

Companies: Pernod, Ricard
