AmBev has been told that it must sell one of its drink brands. The Justice Ministry's Administration Council of Economic Defense (Cade), Brazil's competition watchdog, said yesterday that the company must sell the Marathon sports drink brand as a condition for keeping market leader Gatorade.

AmBev has said that it will follow the ruling.

Having acquired Marathon in 1996, AmBev reached an agreement in 2001 to make, distribute and sell Gatorade in Brazil for Pepsi.

Cade said that when the case was opened in 2002, Marathon held about 17% of Brazil's sports drink market while Gatorade had 70%.
