A rise in the number of physical abuse cases in Finland is expected if alcohol consumption continues to increase. A study by the National Research Institute of Legal Policy has concluded that an extra 2,000 cases of physical abuse will be reported each year if alcohol consumption climbs as expected.

The institute predicts that an increase of one litre in per capita average consumption will cause 1,000 new cases of abuse, an increase of about 4%.

Current estimates suggest that lowered alcohol duties and the increase in permitted imports will increase the annual consumption of alcohol per capita in Finland by about two litres.
