100ml limit must end by 2013

A ban on air passengers carrying drinks onboard planes at EU airports must be lifted in 2013, the EU Council of Ministers has ordered.

The ban must end by 29 April 2013, said the Council this week, adding that non-EU passengers transferring at EU airports should also be able to take their drinks with them, from 29 April 2011.

Since 2007, airport security has confiscated drinks containers exceeding 100ml because of concerns that liquids could be mixed to create explosives.

But, the EU Council of Ministers has ordered airports to introduce more sophisticated screening equipment to identify risky liquids, despite the technical difficulties involved in this task.

Airports can allow drinks onto planes as soon as they install the necessary equipment, but must do so by the deadlines.
