UK: A merry Christmas for Majestic Wine

Majestic Wine has today announced a rise in sales over the Christmas period. The company posted a rise in like-for-like sales for the eight weeks from 6 November to 31 December 2003 of 7.4%.

In a statement, Tim How, chief executive of the retail chain, said: "We are very pleased with our sales performance over the Christmas period. Wines from Bordeaux, Loire, Southern France, South Africa, New Zealand and Chile sold particularly well and Champagne and beer sales grew strongly.

"We continue to see a most encouraging increase in the number of customers on our database who have made purchases in the last twelve months, up by 10.1% on this time last year to 320,000 customers."
