US/CHINA: A-B to build brewery in Guangdong
Anheuser-Busch plans to build a greenfield brewery in the Chinese province of Guangdong.
The US brewing giant said today (3 April) that the investment would help build on the "significant growth" of its Budweiser and Harbin brands in China.
The US$63m project comes as A-B plans an offensive throughout the Chinese beer market. A-B is looking to double the distribution of Budweiser in China over the next five years to reach 100 cities in the country.
The company is also looking to launch Harbin, which is brewed in the north-east of China, in 33 more markets throughout the country this year.
A-B said the construction of the Guangdong brewery, Budweiser Brewing Foshan Co., would ensure it has enough beer to supply its extended footprint in China.
A-B president and CEO August A. Busch IV said: "The Foshan brewery allows us to increase the availability of Budweiser and Harbin premium brands in China where the premium and super-premium beer categories are growing faster than the rest of the industry and have tremendous long-term potential."
The Foshan brewery will be up and running in the latter part of next year and have an initial capacity of 2.6m hectolitres.
