Zimbabwe Food and Drink Report 2012
Report description
While significant downside political and economic risks remain in play, the stability provided by the functional unity government and the ongoing consumer spending kick provided by the dropping of the Zimbabwean dollar in 2009 is expected to continue playing out. We expect continued increases in demand for both basic and nonessential food and drink products, which should allow producers to continue raising productive capacity. Zimbabwe’s low base, abundant natural resources, relatively developed infrastructure and capable workforce will, in our view, provide a platform for continued economic expansion.
Key Industry Trends Signs of Recovery In Drinks Sector: Throughout 2010 and 2011 there were many signs that the Zimbabwean drinks sector could be recovering. In a show of confidence in the re-emerging Zimbabwean consumer market, SABMiller’s beer and soft drinks partner Delta Corporation in May 2010 announced its plans to invest US$112mn in the country, with capital expenditure going mostly towards capacity strengthening. With so much slack left in the economy – Delta is believed to be operating at just 65% of full capacity – there is plenty of scope for growth.
Innscor Revenues Up, Looking To Beef Up Regional Presence: In March 2011, it was reported that Zimbabwe’s Innscor, a snack food producer and food services company, reported a more than 20% increase in revenues to US$255.5mn in its first half to December 2010. The results are a sign of Zimbabwe’s improving consumer side. Dollarisation has breathed life into the economy, which has provided a platform for Innscor to start filling its stores again. Particularly strong in food services, Innscor operates a wide range of fast-food stores in Zimbabwe and the wider Southern and East Africa regions. It is also the Zimbabwean franchisee for the South African restaurant chains Nando’s and Steers. Innscor has built up a niche for itself in food services given the absence of traditional Western fast-food and casual dining giants.
