The IWSR Spirits in Russia Report
Report description
Overall spirits consumption fell by just 0.4% in 2010 versus 2009, compared to an 11.2% drop in 2009 versus 2008, as the market began its recovery post-recession. While local spirits dropped by 0.9% in 2010, imported spirits grew by 10.6%, although imports still only account for 4.7% of the market. Whisk(e)y, gin, tequila, rum, Cognac/brandy, liqueurs and bitters all saw double-digit growth in 2010, but only whisk(e)y and rum exceeded 2008’s consumption levels.
As the Russian economy recovers from yet another crisis the government continues to put pressure on the alcohol industry by increasing excise taxes, and introducing minimum prices and reduced selling hours.
