Highlights
Functional food and drinks manufacturers are developing products designed to capitalize on significantly high unmet needs in the digestive healthcare arena. Among all new functional food and drink products recorded by Product Launch Analytics during 2007–10, 21.2% were claimed to impart digestive health benefits to the consumer.
Of the three groups of digestive health-related ingredient categories (probiotics, prebiotics and food enzymes), probiotics accounted for the vast majority of clinical trials targeting this therapeutic area. The clinical testing of probiotics has more than doubled over the past decade.
The digestive health category has been one of the hardest hit by the new regulatory process in Europe. All claims related to probiotics ingredients have so far been rejected, predominantly because of insufficient characterization. Only three ingredients have been approved for their treatment of gut health: lactulose, wheat grain fiber and calcium.
