The slowdown in the economy has also been reflected in rising unemployment. Slovakia suffers with high structural unemployment, which is one of the highest in the Eurozone.

Many brewers cut costs due to low margins, which were squeezed by previous declining consumption and increasing costs. A knock on effect of these factors was the small brewery, Popper, closing down at the end of 2012.

Slovaks are still watching their wallets on perishables like food and drinks. This has resulted in high price sensitivity and low brand loyalty as many consumers are shopping only for special offers. The loyalty to specific brand has thus been undermined.
