New sin taxes imposed on alcohol in 2012

In volume terms, the Philippines is one of the main beer markets in Asia and beer, in turn, is the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the country.

Brand shifting accelerates

Imports remain a minor element of the market at a fraction of one percent of volume and this seems unlikely to change in the short-term as price restricts the buying audience to a very small part of the population (mainly young professionals).

Key Highlights
Exports are ten times the level of imports but are still restricted. The main exporter is San Miguel Corporation and its top three export markets in 2012, by volume, were Korea (26% of exports), Singapore (12%) and Taiwan (11%).

Filipinos enjoy high alcohol beer. 61% of beer consumed in the country is over 5.5% Abv. Most is Red Horse (6.9% Abv).

Low calorie beers are reasonably popular, accounting for almost 10% of volume last year.

Based upon Canadean's pricing methodology, over three quarter's of beer consumed in the Philippines is mainstream, largely represented by just two brands - Red Horse and San Miguel Pale Pilsen

Red Horse, the extra strong lager sold by San Miguel Philippines, is the outstanding brand in terms of volume and also achieved the greatest increase in incremental volume last year as most of the competition saw sales dip
