Food remained the largest deal segment during the reported period. Both big and mid-sized CPG food companies from the US, Europe and Latin America including Nestlé, Danone, Land O'Lakes, Minerva SA, and Ebro Foods participated in CPG deals.
Deals motivated by geographic expansion were on the rise in November as global companies in the alcoholic drinks, and health and beauty segments actively pursued global expansion in the fast-growing economies to capitalize on the higher purchasing capacity of the middle-income group. This was evident in deals such as Diageo’s planned acquisition of 53.4% stake in United Spirits and GlaxoSmithKline’s offer to acquire additional 31.84% stake in GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare in India.
The combined deal value of M&A activity increased from US$10,059.7 million in October to US$13,067.5 million in November, and was 45% above the TTM average of US$9,030.5 million. The US$6,800.0 million agreement to acquire Ralcorp Holdings, Inc., a manufacturer of private label food, by ConAgra Foods, Inc., a food products producer, was the largest M&A deal recorded which primarily drove the month’s activity.
