BMI View: The Dutch economy contracted by 1.4% quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) during the first quarter of 2014, making it by far the biggest underperformer of the eurozone majors, throwing into doubt the durability of the bloc's recovery. We have revised down our 2014 real GDP growth forecast to reflect the poor Q114 print and still subdued leading indicator data, and warn that the risks are weighed to the downside at this point. Consequently, we do not expect much dynamism in the country's food and drink market in the short term, with discounted goods remaining popular amid high unemployment and rising inflation.
Headline Industry Data (local currency) ¦ 2014 per capita food consumption growth: +2.69%; forecast compound annual growth rate (CAGR) 2014 to 2018 = +3.21%. ¦ 2014 alcoholic drink value sales growth: +1.32%; forecast CAGR 2014 to 2018 = +1.13%. ¦ 2014 soft drink value sales growth: +1.64%; forecast CAGR 2014 to 2018 = +2.56%. ¦ 2014 mass grocery retail sales growth: +4.07%; forecast CAGR 2014 to 2018= +3.70%.
