Morocco Food and Drink Report Q1 2013
Report description
Household consumption will likely grow at a modest pace in early 2013, held down by the slump affecting the domestic agriculture sector, which employs nearly 40% of the country's workforce. Placid inflation has been a bright spot for households, with prices rising by an average of just 1.0% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the first eight months of 2012. Credit growth has seen moderate growth, although households have hardly been the primary beneficiaries, with household lending expanding by an average of 6.4% y-oy in the first eight months of 2012, compared with 39.1% for public sector lending.
BMI's Middle East and North Africa team sees private consumption growing at a moderate rate of 4.0 %in 2013. Although our forecast growth rates are not dynamic, Morocco is likely to remain a favoured regional market for foreign direct investment into its food and drink sector owing to its relative political stability and the fact that there remains plenty of room for growth across its food and drink industry.

Key Regional Company Trends
Kraft Acquires Biscuit Maker For US$150mn: In September 2012, it was announced that Kraft had paid about US$150mn to buy one of the country's leading biscuit companies, Bimo, from the state-owned National Investment Company.
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is well known for its sweet tooth, resulting in some of the world's highest per capita sugar consumption rates. While the free-spending Gulf region is awash with deep-pocketed consumers, with the exception of Saudi Arabia there are too few of them to place the region at the cornerstone of many major food multinationals' regional growth strategies. North Africa, on the other hand, makes up for its lack of spending power per person with some excellent long-term growth prospects. Danone, Nestlé and Kraft Foods have been tuned into this for a while and, more recently, this has translated into some major deal activity, with Morocco the main benefactor.
Dabur India To Establish New Manufacturing Plants: In February 2012, fast-moving consumer goods major Dabur India announced it will invest INR1bn (US$20.1mn) establishing new manufacturing plants in Africa over the next two years to expand its global footprint. According to a company official, the funds will be used primarily to construct plants in places such as Morocco and Southern and Eastern Africa. The official said the new plants will support its existing factories in Nigeria and Egypt.
