BMI View: The Libyan domestic food and drink industry will continue to suffer from political instability and severe government spending cuts. In April 2014 parliament proposed to slash the budget to LYD44bn (USD36bn) from an initially planned LYD68.6bn (USD56.12bn) in an effort to focus on salary payments and ministry spending. These budget constraints will weigh heavily on economic growth and consumer spending this year.

Headline Industry Data ¦ Total food consumption (local currency) growth (y-o-y) in 2014: +6.7%; compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to 2018: +5.9% ¦ Per capita food consumption (local currency) growth in 2014: +5.8%; CAGR: +4.7% • Total mass grocery retail sales (local currency) growth (y-o-y) in 2014: +13.5%; CAGR to 2018: +10.8%
