The outlook for Kenya's food and drink industry continues to look good, with strong growth likely over the short to medium term. The success of premium-chain coffee shops highlight the likelihood that premiumisation will play a major part in the growth of many segments of the Kenyan food and drink industry. Major investment from key multinationals such as PepsiCo (which opened a new US$30mn soft drinks manufacturing plant in Kenya in February 2013) demonstrate confidence in Kenya as an African growth market.

Kenya's organised food retailing sector is in a different league from those of neighbouring Tanzania and Uganda. South African food retailers have yet to enter the Kenyan market and Walmart-owned Massmart's attempts to enter this market were frustrated as recently as October 2013, when a proposed partnership with Kenyan grocery retailer Naivas fell through.
