The IWSR Value Report 2010 is a global comparison of value versus volume, and will be an invaluable tool for all those trying to assess the value of a brand, category, company, country or region.

Over the last five years the value of all spirits categories has risen almost twice as much as volume, but in 2009 volume grew slightly more than value due to the global recession.

Some key findings of The IWSR Value Report 2010:

  • Asia-Pacific is the No.1 region in value terms, with China (€31.25bn) overtaking the US (€23.75bn) for the first time.
  • Diageo remains the leading spirits company in both volume and value terms; LVMH has the highest euro-per-case rate out of all the major companies.
  • Cognac achieves by far the highest euro-per-case rate of the spirits categories, twice the level of Scotch.
  • Super-premium-and-above qualities sold at least 19m cases worldwide, worth €7.35bn, and grew faster than premium.

The IWSR Value Report 2010 is based on multiplying the nine-litre case volumes in The IWSR's reports by the retail price found in the key self-service and specialist outlets checked by The IWSR on annual visits to each country.

The value measured in this report is a smoothed-out measure of consumer expenditure, primarily at retail level. Actual expenditure of cash by consumers will be considerably higher in countries where the on-premise is luxurious, or where on-premise volumes are higher than retail.

Each regional section contains analysis by category, quality, company, brand and country. The global overview also includes calculations of actual consumer expenditure by region, quality and category.
