Key Market Issues
As in earlier years, almost the entire category was made up of non-carbonated drinks in 2012. However, carbonated offerings are showing a tendency to grow having been launched in America that year.

The can remained the lead pack type in 2012 but with a share of just 38%. Bottles took 19% of volume, whilst unpackaged products absorbed 26%. The strong involvement of the latter reflects wide on-premise usage (cafes, coffee bars, street sales).

Key Highlights
The low calorie segment maintained its upward trend in 2012 and finally exceeded 13% of the category. Volumes practically tripled between 2003 and 2012, whilst the segment’s share contribution more than doubled.

Asia remained the main centre of consumption in 2012, being responsible for a contracting 86% of global volumes. In 2006 Asia held a 90% share. Over the same period North America has raised its share of throat by three percentage points to 10%.
