The East Midlands is one of the smaller regions with 4.5 million residents (3rd smallest) and has the second to lowest sq ft of retail space per person (8.9sq ft). Though unemployment has risen 0.3 percentage points to 8.3%, it is the fourth lowest of the GB regions and is 0.4 percentage points under the national average.
As consumers continue to make more considered purchases, oversupply of retail space has become a bigger issue in some areas. The north-east has the third highest sq ft of retail space but also has the highest level of unemployment and lowest average weekly expenditure per person.
