BMI View: President Bongo's recently announced 'Emerging Gabon' project - his plan to diversify the economy in the face of stagnating oil production - relies on building up domestic consumption. Given that Gabon has a population of just 1.7mn, the president is keen to ensure that the country's limited labour force is all contributing to domestic economic growth. Better infrastructure, improved education, and upgraded healthcare would all help to increase domestic spending. However, the country's small population, relative to its regional peers, will continue to weigh on food and drink industry prospects.

Key Forecasts ¦ Per capita food consumption growth (local currency) in 2014: +3.7%; compound annual growth rate (CAGR) 2014 to 2018: +3.2%. ¦ Mass grocery retail sales growth (local currency) in 2014: +13.3%; CAGR 2014 to 2018: +9.8%. ¦ Beer volume sales growth (litres) in 2014: 4.5%; CAGR 2014 to 2018: 3.9%.
