Report description

This study examines the degradable plastic industry in the US by type (polylactic acid, starch-based, cellulose, petroleum-based, polyhydroxyalkanoate and others), product (film, molded goods and other) and market (packaging markets such as packaging film, loose-fill and containers; and nonpackaging markets such as bags, nonwovens, foodservice disposables and agricultural products). Historical data are presented for 1999, 2004 and 2009 with forecasts to 2014 and 2019. Data are presented in pounds and dollars. The term “demand” is used synonymously with “consumption” and reflects US degradable plastic production plus imports minus exports. The study also presents market share and an overview of industry activity, research and development efforts, and international markets.

Biodegradation is the process by which organic substances are broken down by the enzymes produced by living microorganisms such as algae, bacteria and fungi. This report includes only plastics that producers promote as fully degradable and that meet international standards. Oxo-biodegradable and photodegradable resins which achieve biodegradability via additives are not included, except for naturally occurring oxo-biodegradable plastics such as polyethylene oxide.

Information and data on degradable plastic were obtained from primary and secondary sources. Consultations with personnel of degradable plastic resin firms and degradable plastic product producers, industry specialists, trade associations, and financial sources were pursued. Secondary data were obtained from the government as well as trade associations and other private sources. The Biodegradable Products Institute was the primary trade association contacted. Other associations included the American Plastic Council, the Bioplastics Council (Society of the Plastics Industry), the Foodservice & Packaging Institute, the Environment and Plastics Industry Council, the International Biodegradable Polymers Association, the Michigan Biotechnology Institute and the US Composting Council. Trade publications utilized included Biocycle; Compost Science & Utilization; Modern Plastics; Paper, Film & Foil Converter; Plastics News; and Plastics Technology. Government and trade association publications, security analyst reports and numerous other publications were utilized, and online databases were also searched.
